4WD Trips Party - 2007 (32 images)
Aaah, the annual 4WD Trips party. Good location, good people, good times. This year the party was held about 10 miles
down the beach from the town of El Golfo, Sonora Mexico. I believe there were about 10 trucks, 20 people, and 4 dogs.
I got a late start Friday morning (what else is new), so I didn't get down to the border until about 3:30. After crossing
I got lost in San Luis for about 30 minutes. 3 stops and several brown paper bag maps later, I managed to find my way to the
highway (Mex 3). I made it to El Capitan (the meeting spot) at 5:30, but every one was already gone. After a couple ice cold
Sol's and some shrimp tacos, I headed down the beach and made it to camp just before dark.
We spent the first half of Saturday exploring the beach and the old salt flats. After that Jack fired up the grill for some
tri-tip Brazilian style. The rest of the day was spent lounging around the fire, eating... drinking... talking... eating some
more... drinking some more... you get the point.
Sunday morning after packing up camp and saying our goodbyes, myself and a couple others were heading over to Rocky Point. The
dirt road from El Golfo to Rocky point is about 80 miles and pretty slow going. There is a new "coastal highway" under
construction, but at this point it only goes about 15 or 20 miles past Rocky Point. Once this highway is done, you can bet that
El Golfo will soon be lined with 10 story resorts just like Rocky Point. What a shame. We stopped in Cholla Bay for some fish
tacos at JJ's, and then headed to the hotel for the night.
I woke up Monday morning, shoveled some huevos rancheros down my pie hole, puttsed around old town a bit, and then headed home. What a
great trip... just what I needed after being stuck in the concrete jungle for 4 weeks straight. Already looking forward to next year.
