Route 66 - 4-13-07 (58 images)

Route 66... The Mother Road... America's Main Street. I can't even remember now what prompted me to do this little trip. Probably something I saw on TV or read on the evil Internet. Whatever it was, I must thank it for this fun little journey down the road of a bygone era.

Seligman to Topock (165 miles) is the longest stretch of Route 66 still in use today. There is one deviation along that route that happened in the early 1950's. Originally 66 went through the Black Mountains (south of Kingman) via Sitgreaves Pass. This was an extremely dangerous road with steep grades and hairpin turns. In 1951 it was decided to bypass the Black Mountains to the south through a town called Yucca.

I took my time over the course of two and a half days making the 165 mile trek, doing whatever I felt like along the way. I made stops at the Grand Canyon Caverns, Diamond Creek (only road leading to the bottom of the Grand Canyon), and even spent a couple hours exploring the Black Mountains south of Oatman. I enjoyed this little adventure so much I plan on doing it again sometime on my motorcycle.
