Ruby Road 3-8-08 (24 images)
Spent the weekend wandering around southern Arizona along Ruby Road, about 5 miles north of the border. On Saturday we just cruised
around, checked out some ghost towns, failed at a geocache, and did some fishing at Arivaca Lake. I never have much luck fishing lakes
from the shore, but I did manage to catch a Redear Sunfish. I was pretty stoked about that. Never caught a Redear before. One thing we
didn't have time to do was hike
up to the Atascosa lookout. It's a fire tower that was built in the 1930's and abandoned in the 1970's. The famous environmental author
Edward Abbey spent time manning the tower in the late 1960's.
On Sunday we
went over to the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in hopes of finding some good wildflower displays. After looking at my maps I
had a feeling there wouldn't be that many flowers there because of its elevation and terrain. But we went anyways based on last years
Arizona Highways wildflower issue (I believe it was March). They had Buenos Aires listed as a good spot to go. Maybe our timing
was off, but there weren't many flowers to speak of. We didn't even see any antelope. Only thing we saw was a couple packs of mule deer.
